Description
The Chiusi Cathedral Museum, founded in 1932 and renovated in 1984, houses works and artefacts of outstanding historical and artistic value, spanning from the Early Christian period to the 19th century. The museum displays sculptures and inscriptions, silverware and sacred furnishings, paintings, liturgical objects, and a remarkable collection of 22 illuminated manuscripts from the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
An integral part of the complex is the Bishop’s Garden, where visitors can see important remains of the city’s ancient Etruscan, Roman, and medieval walls.
The garden is also the starting point of the Porsenna Labyrinth, a network of approximately 130 metres of underground tunnels that once formed part of an ancient Etruscan drainage and water supply system. The route leads to an atmospheric Etruscan-Roman cistern and ends at the Tower of San Secondiano, whose summit offers sweeping views over the Valdichiana, the surrounding lakes, and Mount Cetona and Mount Amiata.
