Description
The Museo Civico La Città Sotterranea (Underground City Civic Museum) in Chiusi explores the history and archaeology of the local area through two distinct sections, highlighting the city's Etruscan heritage and its fascinating underground world.
The first section introduces visitors to the ancient underground aqueduct of Chiusi, exploring its history, distinctive features, and original purpose. The tour also offers the opportunity to discover part of the ancient network of tunnels and underground hydraulic structures, providing a firsthand glimpse into the remarkable engineering works built beneath the city.
The second section of the museum is housed in the rooms and cellars of Palazzo Bonci-Casuccini, a historic residence once owned by the family of the same name. These spaces preserve fascinating traces of the family's daily life and agricultural activities, including tools and equipment once used to manage the estate. Additional sections of the ancient underground aqueduct can also be seen in the cellars.
The palace cellars also house an extensive collection of Etruscan funerary artifacts, consisting mainly of cinerary urns and funerary tiles. These objects offer valuable insights into Etruscan artistic culture through their decorative motifs, including banquet scenes and depictions of deities and creatures from ancient mythology.
Together, the two sections create a fascinating journey through Chiusi's underground history and its rich archaeological heritage, revealing the deep connection between the city's ancient infrastructure and its Etruscan past.
